CHALLENGE THREE: Climbing The Book Promotion Mountain Effortlessly
Book Promotion Is About Reaching Your Market
Publishers must pack a promotional punch by promoting faster, more aggressively and with a sharp awareness by choosing which approaches are right for a title and which should be avoided. Promotion is where the rubber meets the road—where all the sales are generated for successful publishers.

Focus On Core Promotional Activities
Our most successful publishers continually promote each generation of bestselling titles by using only the promotional activities that directly generate sales. The reason promotion is paramount is because it gives books a really good buzz—pure and simple.

How Promotion Sells More Books...
When Dr. Markham, one of our clients, put out his first diet book we worked to develop a promotional book campaign that involved sending him to America’s Fattest Cities. Soon after he visited the first city, he was booked on CNN's Larry King Live to tell the story of his tour with Actor John Schnieder. Later we worked with Dr. Markham on his book Beyond Atkins to promote it through a cross-promotion with Carborite—the world’s largest sugar-free chocolate manufacturer. The company purchased over $200,000 worth of Beyond Atkins books from the author/publisher in the first sale. The company resold them to retailers internationally. Simon & Schuster soon after bought the rights to the book from Dr. Markham.

Promotion Gives Book Titles an Instant Lift
When publisher Hyperion promoted Linda Greenlawn’s book The Lobster Chronicles, 36,000 lobster bibs advertising the title were given out at seafood restaurants. This helped launch the book over the course of weeks. We have also conducted single promotions for many small publishers under $900. Promotion doesn’t have to be expensive... it just has to work.

Meet Laurie of Jan Gen Press in New York
When Laurie contacted us she had recently left her position at Tufts University as Editor of the school’s magazine to start a book publishing company. We initiated and implemented many promotional campaigns with and for Laurie. It is important to note that of all of our work with Laurie, everything we did was highly successful—interestingly, our Internet promotion gave her 200% more profit than bookstore sales.

Bookstore sales were zero before we started and grew massively within 2 months. However, our Internet marketing promotions grew faster and were much more profitable—and this was excluding Amazon sales. She has continued to re-invest in her promotional activities paying out of her consistently increasing profits.
